Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Fundraiser

Kristin Rosenmund, Administrator

Two clubs teaming up for one common goal.   That is what the Caring Closet Club and the Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Club has done to start their Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Fundraiser that is running from November 14- 18 2022. Both clubs are encouraging members and students of the Rio Mesa community to donate hygiene products, clothes, and non-perishable foods to the front of the office during nutrition.

The Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Club was started just this year by junior Danica Jaruegui, a varsity waterpolo player and swimmer, as well as an IB Diploma candidate at Rio Mesa.  Her idea for the club started this summer after sending in an application to volunteer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

“This club is for people that need a community of their own, for people who feel alone in all they go through, and to let people know that it’s okay to not be okay,” Danica Jauregui expressed when talking about main focus in the creation of this club.

For anyone interested in joining, the Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Club meets every other Monday in rm P-1.

The Caring Closet club is also a new addition to the Rio Mesa community this year.  While advisor Mrs. Jimenez-Ito had the Caring Closet running for years, a place where students can come to get clothes and hygiene products without feeling embarrassed or ashamed that they need these products.  After helping out at the Caring Closet last year, senior Jamie Garcia decided to take the steps to make the Caring Closet Club.

“I’ve always been fortunate enough to have basic items available to me, so I wanted to take the opportunity to make the club and help those in positions where getting these items isn’t as easy.  I also wanted to have members of the club help out with the Caring Closet and become more aware of what some people they pass everyday in the halls are going through.

The Caring Closet Club meets every Thursday in rm 75.
